" My time in Soweto was wonderful - I certainly was welcomed and cared for and I learnt so much about humanity - I found the apartheid experience, emotionally exhausting, tragic, life consoling and energetic and to meet Hector Peterson's sister was quite unreal..... I am attaching as many of the photos as I can. I shall be going back. It was truely wonderful and I certainly never felt different to all others. ...... I hope to get some money together for the School, what a time I had there: the Year 11 pupils sang to me and reduced me to tears. ......Thanks Steve - loved the trip and it has been wonderful for me as a person....

'Excellent tour, guide fantastic, really enjoyed Market Theatre. Staying in Soweto was a unique experience in South Africa, with a contrast between the relaxed atmosphere there, and the almost prison type high walled houses where people live in Johannesburg.

For my part it was a wonderful holiday. Soweto was a pleasure. All the arrangements were spot on and Shadrack was tuned in to us and what we could accomplish after a long trip and no sleep. Yvonne and Jimmy were perfect hosts - the room was comfortable and I felt we could have stayed for days and enjoyed ourselves. We particularly liked the evening entertainment when we went to a community centre jazz evening and also the dinner. The historical element was just right....

' Impression of guides and hostesses'-Fantastic, really welcoming and friendly. 'Accommodation, hospitality and meals at Dakalo- As I expected, warm and comfortable (Breakfast could have been hot rather than warm/cool). Would you recommend Soweto Nights? Yes, definitely, it was very good, thanks.

Sibongile and Jimmy were very friendly and hospitable, and keen to make our stay as welcoming as possible, which we really appreciated. The house was clean, the garden lovely and the beds very comfy. The places you suggested visiting were a really good range. We were very interested to see the contrasting areas of Soweto, the squatter camps, the townhouses and the new mansions. In the museums I was very impressed with how brilliantly the last 60 or so years have been documented and portrayed, with riveting and moving oral testimony and film and video footage, and with the way this is used constantly as a source for discussion and debate especially with young people on school trips.

I have just returned from my SA trip and I had a fantastic time. Sibongile and Dollie were both so welcoming and really looked after me. We all share an interest in gardening. Lawrence was a great tour guide, informative but full of interesting stories as well. I didn't expect a guide all to myself. The shebeen trip gave them much amusement, but I was really made to feel welcome. Walking down the road that Dollie lived in was more like being in a Cambridge road than anything I saw in Cape Town, with people talking to each other, being able to see people's front doors, cars parked in the street and some teenagers having a noisy party. At Nelson Mandela's house I met Rita Marley (Bob Marley's wife) I was completely overcome and my sons are so jealous. I think Constitution Hill was much more interesting than Robben Island as it gave you more insight into the conditions and the new court is a stunning building.
